When asked, who is Kae Tempest? They give a brief, albeit telling answer. "Kae Tempest is the words," they respond. You haven't ever seen, heard, or experienced anyone quite like them.
The London-born, BRIT Award and Mercury Prize-nominated spoken word artist, rapper, poet, novelist, and playwright rhymes with a century-turning fury. Since their emergence in 2011, they have redefined what it means to be a wordsmith in the Modern Age. To date, they have published six poetry collections, staged three plays, written two books, and released three studio albums. Along the way, they entranced audiences on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night With Seth Meyers, NPR's "Tiny Desk," and more. Not to mention, they garnered widespread critical acclaim from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Forbes, and more, to name a few. In the midst of this whirlwind journey, they performed a passage of their popular 75-minute narrative poem, Brand New Ancients, on television. Legendary producer and American Recordings Founder Rick Rubin caught the show, tracked down their phone number, and made a call. This set a series of events in motion that led to their 2019 debut album for American Recordings, The Book Of Traps & Lessons (produced by Rubin and Tempest’s frequent collaborator, Dan Carey), released to critical acclaim. The finale of the album, "People's Faces," notably soundtracked a Facebook commercial, and they went on to deliver a showstopping performance of it on The Tonight Show. Between collaborations with The Comet is Coming and High Contrast, they unveiled a non-fiction book entitled On Connection during 2020. With more words meant to heal, Kae returns with their new album, The Line Is A Curve [American Recordings/Republic Records], on April 8, 2022—preceded by the single "More Pressure" with Kevin Abstract.
