The Weeknd’s landmark debut LP, Trilogy has achieved a platinum certification from the RIAA for sales in excess of one million. The album remarkably reached this milestone only six months since its release in November 2012. This doesn’t just herald his arrival as a major influencer, it also speaks to the strength of the partnership between his visionary collective XO and Republic Records.
With 30 songs on Trilogy, the Canadian alternative R&B innovator captivated both listeners and critics. Upon release, the collection landed at #4 on the Billboard Top 200,. Digitally, it reached #2 on the iTunes Overall Albums Chart, while holding strong on the R&B chart.
Major gatekeepers continue to extol The Weeknd. The New York Times called him “other worldly”, The Source named him “Songbird of his generation, while The Guardian dubbed him a “blatantly provocative and daring new artist”. Spin put it best in two simple words: “Totally amazing”. His peers echo that excitement. Superstar Drake adds, “Songs like ‘Crew Love’ and ‘The Zone’ are what people wait to hear all night”.
Now, all eyes are on the future. The Weeknd is currently in the studio working tirelessly on his follow-up to Trilogy entitled, Kiss Land. As soon as he tweeted the title, anticipation immensely built amongst his devout fan base and press alike.
The album is preceded by the title track, which he personally revealed last week. Now available on iTunes, it’s a sultry, smooth, and smoky trip into another hazy nightscape, propelled by his inimitable voice and wrapped in hazy production. Once again, the music preserves everything fans love as he shrouds sexy soul within ponderous secrecy. After you visit Kiss Land, you may never be the same.
