Black Music Month Out With A BangJune 30, 2013
Black Music Month wraps up with a bang on June 30th and the celebration keeps on keeping on. This week Republic Records’ all-stars and hot off the benchers are hitting the stage at the BET Awards and Essence Music Festival.
The BET Awards (airing Sunday June 30th on…hold for it…BET) kicks things off with a pre-show performance by rapper Ace Hood, who will most likely be arriving in a “Bugatti.”
And once the camera is on, look for our favorite former American Idol judge, and all-around badass, Nicki Minaj. Not only is she performing, but Nicki is up for Best Female Hip-Hop. After last year’s show, we can’t wait to see what Nicki is getting ready to hit us with:
Not to be out done, Drake is not only up for Best Male Hip–Hop but he leads the nominations for the night. Drizzy is going to have a bizzy night. He’s got three Best Collaborations nominations: 2 Chainz /ft Drake “No Lie,” Kendrick Lamar/ft Drake “Poetic Justice,” and French Montana/ft Rick Ross, Drake and YMCMB bawse Lil Wayne “Pop That.” Drake’s also up for Best Video for “Poetic Justice,” “No Lie,” “HYFR”(ft Lil Wayne) and “Started From the Bottom.” Talk about GQ smooth:
The Republic domination continues with The Weekend’s nomination as Best New Artist (Canada represent!) while Music Matters, which shines a light on progressive black music, showcases PJ Morton and Adrian Marcel.
Peep Adrian’s co-sign from Raphael Saadiq:
On July 4-7th the Republic crew moves from LA to NOLA for the Essence Music Festival. Along with superstars (this year the headliner is Mrs. Carter), Essence is where newbies go to make some noise, or in the case of Daley, some baby-making music (but with an English accent).
Also keep an ear out for soulful, hometown singer-songwriter (and Maroon 5 keyboardist) PJ Morton. NOLA in the house!
