Given his prolific output and the runaway smash success of “This Girl” [vs. Cookin’ on 3 Burners], it’s no surprise that Valentin Brunel, aka KUNGS, first connected to music at the age of just 5.
Growing up in the South of France, his parents gifted him a Djembe and ignited his journey. Mastering the instrument, he devoured soul, funk, blues, and rock records from mom and dad’s collection. Developing a passion for house music, he immersed himself in Ableton Live. During high school, he started uploading productions to Soundcloud. His unofficial remixes of Lana Del Rey and Bob Marley went viral. Shortly after, Axwell & Ingrosso and Lost Frequencies would tap him for official remixes, and his take on the latter’s “Are You With Me” accumulated more than 19 million-plus YouTube views. His first original “To Describe You” with Mozambo featuring Molly crossed the 1-million mark on Soundcloud within mere days of its release.
In 2016, “This Girl” [vs. Cookin’ on 3 Burners] transformed him into a veritable electronic dance music sensation. In less than a year, the single was certified GOLD by the RIAA and cumulatively amassed 400 million-plus streams and counting. It held #1 on Shazam Global for 12 consecutive weeks and went Top 3 on Shazam US for more than five weeks. It charted on five formats at radio, peaking at #26 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Today Show showcased the track as Carson Daly’s “Morning Jam,” and it soundtracked the video revealing Kendall Jenner’s Vogue cover co-starring the entire Kardashian family. Stirring up critical acclaim, Billboard placed him on 2016’s coveted “21 Under 21” list. David Guetta handpicked him for a string of European tour dates, and the two also recently logged sometime in the studio together.
Now, Kungs’ full-length debut Layers [Casablanca Records] illuminates the diversity and dynamics inherent within his signature sound. Featuring “Don’t You Know” [feat. Jamie N Commons], “I Feel So bad” [feat. Ephemerals], and “Melody” [feat. Luke Pritchard of The Kooks], the album unfolds every facet of this unique and undeniable dance floor phenomenon.
