Artist Spotlight: tyDi

What does success mean to you?

Well in short I’d say that success means reaching your goals, the complication is that my goals are always changing. For me personally success is constantly improving as an artist and writing songs that my fans love.

The video has kind of a CIA, enemy combatant vibe. Who came up with that?

The idea for the video evolved from conversations between myself, my manager and the video director. I always like to be a part of my music videos.

Was it fun getting to play fight and get all bloodied up?

Very fun! The video was a bit kinky too, what guy wouldn’t love acting it out ;)

Why has electronic music and EDM caught on so big in The States?

Electronic music is just addictive; there are no rules with electronic music. Bands are limited to the instruments they can play. Electronic producers can create any sound imaginable. EDM (Electronic Dance Music) was huge in Europe and the UK for decades but eventually it made its way to America, now you guys love it!

How do you pick your featured singers?

Talent… I’m always looking for vocalists that are unique. They need to have something special about them. I work with many vocalists, we just vibe out in the studio and see where it leads us.

Who would you like to work with?

Bert McCracken, the lead singer from a band called The Used. The guy’s voice is insane!

Why do you make music?

Music is like a drug; it makes you feel something. You know that feeling you get when you hear a song that has something that resonates with you personally and all the hairs on your arms stand up? That’s why I do this.

What do you love about it?

I love that music doesn’t really ‘exist’ anywhere. It’s just vibrations recorded on various media. A song is just a concept, an arrangement of vibrations that make up waveforms; but when you hear it you feel something, it moves you. Music is my drug of choice.

If you couldn’t make music, what would you do for a living?

I’d be lost. Maybe a magician?

What was the first concert you went to?

I saw Blink-182 when I was about 14.

What was the first record you bought?

A song called ‘Whiteroom’.

What’s your fave record out right now and why?

“Up All Night” by Daft Punk! I only chose that because my fave song changes every day and this new Daft Punk single is stuck in my head!

What’s your sad/mad/happy go to song?

Sad – ‘Miss You’ by Trentemoller

Happy – ‘Open’ by Rhye

Mad – ‘A Box Full of Sharp Objects’ by The Used
