Artist Spotlight: The Weeknd’s 10 Best Answers From His Recent Reddit “Ask Me Anything” Q&A

The Weeknd is everywhere right now. And with good reason. Last Tuesday, he released his official debut album, Kiss Land, which features the songs, “Kiss Land,” “Belong to the World,” and “Live For”—and it’s already getting tons and tons of positive feedback from music fans. So The Weeknd has been traveling around promoting the album (he made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live late last week) and performing all over the place.

However, The Weeknd—real name: Abel Tesfayedid sit down for a few minutes late last week for a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” Q&A with some of his fans. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything” sessions, it gives people the chance to ask celebrities, well, anything. And The Weeknd provided his fans with some great insight into who he is  as both an artist and  a person during his “AMA.” Just check out the best questions and answers from his Reddit Q&A below.

Question #1: “Where did ‘The Weeknd’ come from? I’ve always wondered.”

The Weeknd’s Response: “I left home when I was about 17 dropped out of high school and convinced Lamar to do the same lol. We grabbed our mattresses from our parents threw it in our friends s—– van and left one weekend and never came back home. It was gonna be the title of HOB. I hated my name at the time though so I tried it as a stage name. It sounded cool. I took out the ‘e’ because there was already a canadian band named the weekend (copyright issues).”

Question #2: “Hey Abel. Really love your music. How long did it take to make your first album, House of Balloons? Also, what are the main differences in creating music, now that you’re signed and famous?”

The Weeknd’s Response: “House of balloons was special because I had no deadline and nobody knew me so there were no expectations. Spent a year making it perfect. Every song had at least like 7 Different versions to them before picking the right one.”

Question #3: “Because your music is obviously very much influenced by love and relationships, do you believe that the relatable subject of sex and infatuation is the most powerful way of getting your music across to people?”

The Weeknd’s Response: “The latter one.”

The Weeknd’s Response: “Yes fluently. First language I learned. Had no dad and mom was working 24/7 so my grandma raised me until I was like 5. No English.”
