Angel Haze’s “Echelon (It’s My Way)” — What the Critics are SayingSeptember 2, 2013
Angel Haze continues to bless her fans with ferocious little gifts. Via his BBC Radio 1 show, DJ Zane Lowe shared “Echelon” as his current “hottest record in the world,” and indeed the song is a fiery word-stuffed joy.
Haze, as expected, raps circles around her competition (handily identified here as “these chickens”) and even sings quite angelically in between references to Fashion Week, self-made messiahs, and Murciélagos. “Echelon” follows the darkly woozy “No Bueno,” the bizarrely Green Day-referencing “Initiation,” the unfinished “Turn It Around,” and her remake of Kanye West’s “New Slaves.” - SPIN Magazine
Up to this point, Angel Haze‘s hunger has been her greatest asset, helping her stand out among a crop of female rappers that have emerged over the last few years. But while “Echelon (It’s My Way)” finds her sounding somewhat comfortable, it’s still unmistakably an Angel Haze track– and that means she’s not going to let you forget that she can rap her ass off. - Pitchfork
